Uganda is a country in Africa with a population of 30 million, approximately 60% of whom are unemployed. Living conditions for the majority of the Ugandan people are below the poverty line with no clean running water and no electricity. With so many people surviving on little to no income, Uganda desperately needs responsible and educated leaders to lead the country to better things and a brighter outlook for its people.
Fortunately this is the key objective of children's charity Watoto, which has been supported by Harbour IT.
In early January 2009 Craig Bishop along with his wife Alison and son Thomas, journeyed to Uganda with a self funded group from their church to build and sustain a schoolhouse for a community. Leading up to the trip, the group raised over $55,000 for Watoto through fund raising activities.
Watoto works primarily with children in developing nations often ravaged by war and disease. Craig himself didn't realise the breadth of the work of Watoto until his wife Alison became involved "I initially only thought [Watoto] was providing homes and families for displaced orphans. I learned however that it is a complete program for raising future leaders. It has been going for nearly twenty years now and I was lucky enough to meet with and speak with some of the kids who have been through the system and whom after completing university are about to enter the Uganda legal system and politics."
Through their support and development of Uganda's children, Watoto are contributing to opportunities for the nation. Graduates from the Watoto program will greatly increase the possibility of a better future for all citizens of Uganda. One where tribal wars and corrupt governments are displaced by a generation of people who are better educated, have better ideals and values and who are not from a minority of corrupt families.
On behalf of Watoto Harbour IT would like to thank all who have contributed financially and with their time to this valuable work, and hope that more individuals and organisations see the value of assisting this organisation in its future endeavours.
